Today turned into an unexpected rest day.
We woke up to the sound of pouring rain, and the forecast promised more of the same for the entire day.
The next stage isn’t especially difficult because of the terrain, it’s the distance that’s intimidating. At 25.5 km (15.8 miles) with an estimated hiking time of 10 hours, it’s a long day even in perfect weather. Hiking that far while soaked from head to toe didn’t sound like much fun – to me.
Over breakfast, we discussed our options and unanimously voted (all two of us) in favor of staying put for another night at George’s guesthouse.
George was thrilled.
Actually, George was over the moon that Massimo was staying another day. I’m pretty sure if I disappeared, he’d simply shrug and ask, “So… Massimo, another coffee?”
As for me, I didn’t need much convincing. After staying up until 3 am finishing yesterday’s blog, my body was asking for another day of sleep and recovery. Between the miles we’ve already covered and the lack of sleep, a little extra rest feels more like a necessity than a luxury.
Now, if Massimo had been hiking alone, I’m convinced he’d have put on his bright orange rain poncho and sandals, tightened his backpack straps, and happily walked all 25.5 kilometers (maybe more) through the downpour without a single complaint.
Unfortunately for him…he’s stuck with me.
I like hiking. I even like getting caught in the occasional rain shower every now and again.
But voluntarily choosing to spend ten hours sloshing through cold, soaking-wet trails?
That’s where I draw the line.
Call me soft. Call me practical.
Either way, the trail isn’t going anywhere.
Tomorrow, with any luck, we’ll have dry feet, rested bodies, blue skies, and another 25.5 kilometers of Romania waiting for us.
It rained like this most of the day.
Fun fact: George is a dentist. I would have never guessed.
