Raise your hand if you have never heard of Andorra. 🙋‍♀️

Raise your hand if you did not know that Andorra is a tiny country nestled in the Pyrennes Mountains between France and Spain. 🙋‍♀️

Raise you hand if you did not know that Andorra is only a three-hour bus ride from Barcelona. 🙋‍♀️

I didn’t know any of this and now I do. So for those of you who also didn’t know, we both got an education. This is just one of the many things I love about traveling…learning.

The same woman at the hostel who recommended I visit Girona also recommended that I go to Andorra for a day trip. Her mother lives there as well.

Below are a few facts about Andorra that I found online…then I will tell you about my experience.

Geography & Location

  • Location: In the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain.

  • Size: About 468 square kilometers (181 square miles) one of the smallest countries (17th) in the world and the sixth smallest in Europe.

  • Capital: Andorra la Vella, which is the highest capital city in Europe at 1,023 meters (3,356 ft) above sea level.

Politics & Government

  • Type of Government: Parliamentary co-principality, unique because it has two heads of state:

    • The President of France.

    • The Bishop of Urgell (a Spanish bishop).

  • Not a member of the European Union (EU), but has a special relationship and uses the euro (€).

  • Not part of Schengen, but border checks are light and informal.

History

  • Founded in 1278 through a feudal charter, one of Europe’s oldest existing nations in its original form.

  • It was neutral in both World Wars and the Spanish Civil War.

Nature & Tourism

  • About 90% of Andorra is mountains and forests.

  • Famous for skiing, hiking, and mountain sports. Resorts like Grandvalira and Vallnord draw thousands of visitors.

  • Tourism accounts for over 80% of Andorra’s GDP.

Economy & Shopping

  • Duty-free shopping is a major draw for visitors, especially from France and Spain.

  • No airport or train station; access is by road only.

People & Culture

  • Population: Around 80,000.

  • Official language: Catalan (also speak Spanish and French widely).

  • High quality of life, low crime, and long life expectancy (around 83 years), one of the safest countries in the world.

Education & Lifestyle

  • Education is free and trilingual: students can choose systems (Andorran, Spanish, French).

  • Literacy rate: nearly 100%

  • Very clean air and environment due to elevation and low industrial pollution.

Fun & Unique Facts

  • Andorra has no national bank.

  • It didn’t have an official national anthem until 1914, or a constitution until 1993.

  • Andorra has no military — France and Spain are responsible for its defense.

I also learned that Andorra is a hot spot for money laundering…and…if you want to disappear, this is the place to go because the bus didn’t stop at immigration and they never looked at or stamped my passport so it was like I was never even there. I felt a little bit like James Bond.

This was probably my shortest visit to any country. Does this count as the 59th visited country if I didn’t get my passport checked? I’m claiming it…even for a day.

Oh, and did I mention that it is stunningly beautiful? Just look at this view.

My trip was quick yet efficient.

I arrived in Andorra la Vella (the capital) around noon and was on the five o’clock bus back to Barcelona.

Here was my to-do list.

  1. Eat lunch (food is always at the top of my list).

  2. See the La Noblesse du Temps sculpture by Salvador Dalí (The Melting Clock).

  3. Mail postcards to my dad and my best friend’s kid.

  4. Stroll by the Gran Valira River.

  5. Do a little tax-free shopping on Meritxell Avenue.

  6. Visit the Caldea Spa.

There is soooo much more to experience in Andorra la Vella but I didn’t have the time so I only did the few things that were important to me. Here is a website with more things to see and do.

  1. Most places were closed by the time I was ready to eat lunch so I grabbed a snack – not much to write home about.

  2. La Noblesse du Temps

  3. Postcards – I bought a couple of postcards at La Casa dels Tabacs (one of the oldest tobacco shops in Andorra – tobacco shops in Europe usually sell stamps but not in this town) and in return for my Euros from Spain, I now have a few coins that say Andorra. Also, I spent a fair amount of time in the post office which limited my sightseeing opportunities but it was worth it. I met some lovely people while waiting for my number to be called.

  4. Gran Valira River flows right through the city center and adds to the charming ambiance of the city. It is also the longest river in Andorra (22 miles/35km).

  5. Tax-free shopping – Andorra la Vella is full of department stores, malls, and specialty shops. Anything you desire, you will probably find in Andorra – and cheaper than most places in Europe.

  6. Caldea Spa – I LOVE a good spa experience but there was absolutely no way I could do this in one day. I debated spending the night just for this experience but the timing didn’t work for my trip. I would 100% go back to Andorra just for this place. Just look at their website, it looks amazing!     Sadly, I was back in Barcelona before I knew it but I will definitely be returning to Andorra in the future.
