Today one of my favorite people arrived in Florence. This is his first time in Italy and his very first time traveling outside of the United States. I’m beyond excited to be able to host him and to see Italy through his eyes. Plus, I’m really proud of him for stepping outside of his comfort zone (he hates to fly) and trying something new in a place that is foreign to him. Not to mention he was going to meet Luca for the first time…so far so good on that front.
So who is this mystery guest?
My dad! My dad flew all the way from Kansas City to visit me and meet Luca in Florence. He is a pretty great dad if I do say so myself.
When he arrived he looked pretty good for such a long day of traveling. He was all smiles and gave me a great big hug before introducing himself to Luca. After our quick greetings, we hopped on the tram to the city center to check him into his hotel so he could drop off his bags and clean up after his travels. He brought Luca a surprise – four boxes of Christopher Elbow chocolates from Kansas City…Luca’s new favorite sweet.
After he cleaned up, Luca and I took him for a stroll around neighborhood to look at the Duomo and Piazza della Reppublica (the one with the carousel). Luca explained a little of the history and they discussed architecture – one of my dad’s primary interests. The city has already started decorating the streets for Christmas – so fun! After our short tour to give him a lay of the land, we went to a restaurant for dinner around the corner from his hotel. The Americans ate pasta and the Italian had a burger. The burger was bigger than any I have ever seen in the US. After dinner, we dropped my dad off at his hotel so he can get a good night of sleep. Tomorrow will be another adventure!
